The Snitch strikes again! Overwatch 2’s play of the game is to go free-to-play on PS5 and PS4, with Early Access scheduled to get underway from 4th October. The previous Overwatch game was a full-price release, but with fierce competition from the likes of Fortnite and even PC-based titles like Valorant, developer Blizzard is perhaps feeling the heat to switch business models. Of course, the series already had strong monetisation systems in place, so it’s not like the developer’s going to go broke or anything.
“We can’t wait to roll out the beginning of the Overwatch 2 experience on 4th October and introduce an exciting new competitive vision, featuring amazing new content and a reimagining of the iconic heroes, maps, and gameplay that made the original game so compelling,” Blizzard Entertainment bigwig Mike Ybarra in a press release. “This is the beginning of an always-on and always-evolving era for the franchise, and a recommitment to serving players with frequent and substantial updates planned well into the future to keep Overwatch 2 fresh and fun for many years to come.”
Blizzard has also announced a new character, the Junker Queen. In addition, the press release reveals: “New and iconic international locations will also arrive in-game at launch, from the snowy New Queen Street in Toronto to the bustle of Midtown Manhattan. Overwatch 2 additionally introduces the new Push game mode, a symmetrical map type where teams battle to take control and advance a centrally-located robot deeper into enemy territory than the opposing team.”

This being F2P is giving me a REALLY bad feeling. Even more so after the BS Microtransactions in Diablo Immortal. But we'll see how it goes.
To be honest, I wasn't going to buy this, but will definitely play free-to-play.
Free to play simply means “we judge we’ll get more money from kids and people vulnerable to bad money management” than we would by trying to convince people to put down a clear amount of money up front.
So, yeah, not playing their game.
@thefourfoldroot1 Maybe, but I think that's cynical. Free to play also means a lower barrier for entry, which is important for a multiplayer game when there's so much competition.
These games live and die sometimes by how many people are playing tbh.
Next story........Overwatch 2 banned in Belgium.
@get2sammyb
No, they live or die by how profitable they are for the publishers, obviously. Relying on whales, who commonly can have impulse control issues rather than just being rich, is immoral, even if it lets the rest of us play for free.
So we can expect even more loot boxes, also they are being crafty here, if they sell their game in shops then kids can't buy it anymore due to the age rating because of the gambling system, but making but free to play means anyone can just go on the store and downlaod it no hassle.
Also expect battle passes and less content awrned through playing and more through paying, in overwatch 1 you got a pack evey time you levelled up, that will be gone in this one I bet
Finally after massacring them on Facebook over and over it seems they heard me x)
This is the ONLY way this game wouldn't flop hard. Now if they play their cards (skins) nicely, they can actually make some money and have a good game
It's amazing how much Overwatch has fallen as a franchise at this point.
@get2sammyb we've got plenty of reasons to be cynical. And being a cynic is a good thing. All to often people use the word with a vaguely negative connotation or as if it's a position that can be viewed as overly cautious but cynicism is exactly what we need to excersise when dealing with F2P games. The many, many examples of games that disrespect gamers' time and money means we need to remain wary of all F2P games until they reveal their nature. Developers and publishers only have themselves to blame for that.
And these games do not necessarily live and die by how many people play them but by how much people spend on them. 1 whale is worth a thousand gamers, but it does need populated servers, sure.
I love the original Overwatch and I was really looking forward to the sequel, but I’m not a fan of free-to-play games. I just find that they get bogged down by a lot of unnecessary faff.
I feel Overwatch will benefit more for going for the free-to-play model.
F2P just makes game feel...cheaper to me. Or you wind up paying even more for a complete experience than you would just paying something once.
I really can't trust Blizzard with anything anymore. The only way I'll be even remotely interested itls when it both reviews really well and microtransactions are fair.
We all know that's never gonna happen.
Super excited for this!
I want to say it’s free to play because they promised PVE and it’s not going to be ready. I definitely think they’ll charge for the single player part of the game 😅
@thefourfoldroot1 Fortnite is a free to play game, yet still remains very pro consumer. I know many people who refuse to spend a penny in the game, and managed to get plenty of skins and participate in every season for rewards.
@Abeedo
That’s the point though. Many don’t pay anything, meaning others need to be rinsed.
I’ve played well over a thousand hours of the first one but the thought of giving anything Blizzard the time of day makes me feel ill.
its just the first game with some new skins and maps
@thefourfoldroot1 I have two points about this. First of all, Fortnite wouldn't dabble in loot boxes, it's just skins you can get in the store, or from the battle pass. Considering the fact that people know what they're getting beforehand, it means people will only invest if they want something. With loot boxes people end up buying and rebuying due the randomness of the situation.
Second of all, I can say whales exist in so many varieties that you can't really confine them to just live service games. If a game comes out, most people getting it will get the regular releases, but there will always be those that get €200 collector's editions. Even with indie games, people would prefer shelling out for €50 physical editions, despite the fact that the games exist for less than a tenner on the digital store. There will always be people who want to spend more money than they should, so the best thing a company can do is make their sale options as consumer-friendly as possible so that ordinary people don't feel pressured into paying lots of money just to feel like they're enjoying the game.
Good, because I was curious but didn't want to give Blizzard any money. Now I can at least give it a shot.
@ztpayne7 @get2sammyb @ThatMusicFan Same super excited! I'm looking forward to finally giving Overwatch a chance.
@rawzeku why?
the last game was essentially a F2P game you had to pay $60 for lol
If the monetisation is the same as it was on Overwatch 1, I might give it a look (I kinda burned out of 1, and felt cheated after shelling out for loot boxes for a specific skin which then turned up again the following year, under the misapprehension that it was "now or never" to get the skin during a timed event).
If there is any of this manipulative "season pass" bullsh*t or other innovations I'll be staying well clear.
@BartoxTharglod exactly , well said . glad someone else sees the real reason overwatch fell from grace - horrendous balance and lack of new content .
